Wingspan 27-32 mm. Male has a brownish forewing which can be quite variable, yet usually distinguished by a row of black dots along edges of both forewing and hindwing. A dark melanic form ab. fuscata can be seen in industrialised areas such as the Midlands. Females are flightless with only vestigial wings. Larvae feeds on several different species of deciduous tree including oaks, hawthorns and willows. Overwinters as a pupa. Seen February to April in various habtats, including woodland, hedgerows and gardens. Males are attracted to light. Resident, common and widespread.
