Forewing length 17-20 mm. The hindwing is pale straw-yellow with brown borders. The forewing pattern may vary. The larva feeds on various grasses. The adult flies July and August, and is found in parks, gardens, open woodland and grassland. It is widespread and locally common in England and Wales, though scarce in the south-west.
