Forewing length 14-19 mm. A very distinctive species with characteristic forewing markings. The larva feeds on a variety of herbaceous plants. The adult flies in two broods, May to June, and August to September. Only one generation in the north in July and August. Found in a wide variety of habitats, including woodland and gardens. Resident and suspected immigrant, common and widespread throughout.
