Prickly Sow-thistle Sonchus asper

Plant height up to 1.5 m. Flower width 2-2.5 cm.

The flowers are a golden yellow, and the leaves, as the English vernacular name describes, are prickly and shiny green.

It might possibly be confused with Smooth Sow-thistle (Sonchus oleraceus).

It flowers June to August, and may be seen growing on cultivated land, brownfield sites, and roadside verges. Very common and widespread throughout Britain except the far north of Scotland.
