I have seen these lovely woodpeckers on occasion in my local woods, but never expected one in the garden, so you can imagine my delight and excitement at the time. This is a male identified by the bright red patch on the back of the neck.
You can hear these birds knocking on wood up in the trees with their strong beaks as they search for food like beetle larvae. They will also eat nuts and seeds.
Widespread across the UK, and seen in woodland, parks and gardens where there are mature trees.
