Great Pond Snail – Lymnaea stagnalis

Shell height 35-50mm, width 18-25mm. This is the largest pond snail in Britain, and the most commonly seen because of its size. It has a long and pointed spire, with an aperture heigh over half the shell height.

Common in ponds, lakes, canals and slow-moving rivers where there is plenty of aquatic vegetation. Seen all year round, and widespread in England, scarce in Wales and Scotland.
