Length 1.5-2 mm.

A globular springtail where the body colour is generally purplish-brown or yellowish, but the colour and mottling can vary where it has different forms.

Seen all year round, it feeds on mould and fungi. Found in damp places such as moss on trees, under loose bark, and leaf litter. Common and widespread in England and Scotland, less so in Wales where there are few records.
