Crystal Brain Fungus – Exidia nucleata

Exidia nucleata (Schwein.) Burt



Size up to 1 cm across.

Also called Crystal Brain or Granular Jelly Roll, it is whitish and gelatinous with small, white, mineral inclusions. Its form can be globular, pustular or brain-like. When dry it forms a rubber patch which is hardly noticable and can be easily overlooked.

Seen throughout the year, but especially in autumn and winter. Found on dead and rotting attached or fallen branches and twigs of broadleaved trees. Common and widespread thoughout Britain.
