Common Mourning Bee – Melecta albifrons

Melecta albifrons (Forster, 1771)



FW length – 10-11.5 mm.

This is a fairly large bee with a grey collar and distinctive white abdominal spots.

It is seen mid-March to early June, and is found where its host the Hairy- footed Flower Bee (Anthophora plumipes) may be found. Widespread and frequent over much of southern England extending northward to Yorkshire.
