Coal Tit – Periparus ater

This is a small tit, in fact the smallest of all of the British tits, with a black bib and cap, and white neck patch. It has olive-grey back and a whitish-buff underside.

It is considered to be a bird of coniferous woodland, where it nests in tree hollows high in the canopy, but they can be seen in other habitats, including gardens, where it may nest in boxes and visit bird feeders. Naturally it feeds on insects, also seeds and beechmast. The Coal Tit will hide and hoard food in preparation for harder times.

Seen all year round, and is common and widespread throughout.
