There are 6 native species of reptile in the UK: 3 snakes and 3 lizards, as well as several non-native species which include turtles. Reptiles are characterised by their dry, scaly skin which can retain water so well they can live in some of the hottest and driest places on Earth. All regularly shed their skin, and their metabolism depends on the temperature of their environment, and they are cold-blooded. A few species give birth to live young, but most lay eggs in a simple nest. Examples of reptiles are snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles and crocodiles. We must not forget the mighty dinosuars were reptiles too.
