This acorn is growing on Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur). Acorns are rich in nutrients, and not only do mighty oak trees grow from acorns, but so do the various birds, mammals, insects and other animals which rely on them throughout the season.

Every autumn, acorn falls remind me of my years with my pet squirrel. To replicate a seasonal, natural diet, I collected dandelions, acorns, and such. It was great fun to have someone open my freezer in late fall and see bags of acorns. Sometimes they figured it out on their own, and sometimes I’d tease them by saying things like, “They really go well in stir-fry.”

We call them “Ekollon” in Swedish, but they cannot be find here in Malta. A very nice photo of this healthy nut, best eaten when roasted.

Beautiful! They look much larger than those we have here, but perhaps it is your perspective π

That acorn has a nice ridged texture that I have not seen on ours. Maybe that will become a mighty oak.

Many of the acorns are maturing and falling off, and I think this one is just about hanging one π

Our squirrels here are busy collecting the acorns before they hit the ground. Last year I was lucky enough to find half a dozen for a fall shelf display.

The squirrelshear don’t appear to be so quick as yours π
