500 Insects

I have now photographed and uploaded 500 different species of insect to this site. Try to take in these facts about insects, they are quite astounding to comprehend:

  • There are more than 200 million insects for every human being living on the planet.
  • There are between 1 and 10 quintillion (can you imagine that number? I can’t) insects which are surrounding us in almost every environment on Earth.
  • Insects account for well over half of all of all multicellular species.
  • Insects come in around a million different variants.
  • Around 479 million years ago insects appeared on the planet, long before the dinosaurs, and long before us.
  • Insects developed flight 400 million years ago, which means they had total air dominance for more than 150 million years.
  • Insects have survived 5 mass extinction events.

So there we have it: The Earth belongs to the insects. And they will be around long after we have gone on our way. So enough text … and now for some photos I have taken of these amazing and most fascinating six-legged creatures:

Wow, Pete, 500 insects is an awfully large number of insects to photograph and identify. Congratulations on reaching that milestone. Of course, the statistics that you provided help to put that number in context, but it is impressive and reflects a lot of hard work on your part. You cool photos do a wonderful job of showing the range of species included in that total of 500.

Finding and identifying that many inverts is an achievement in itself! Insects are often overlooked or dismissed as just ‘some kind of bug’ but their variety is staggering, and as you point out, they are a major component of life on Earth.

That’s quite an accomplishment, Pete. Happily we know that you, and I too, have just scratched the surface so to speak. 🙂 This is a pretty nice portfolio of images.

500! You have to work a little more, it will not even be one per mille of all species that exist 😉. Very nice examples of the diversity of the insect world that you photographed

Congrats on reaching 500, Pete, quite the accomplishment! Your blog is such a great resource. When I think of ID-ing insects, I think of you. If only you recorded ones here. 😉

Fascinating species in numbers, variety and living forms! 5 mass extinctions, wow. And it needs only mankind to eradicate them. Hopefully not. Probably not. Several of these insects will survive more extinctions. Though often not valued they know how to survive 🙂 Not that bad it seems. Great shots!

It’s wonderful that you’ve photographed and catalogued so many for us, Pete. I’ve not only enjoyed your postings, I’ve learned so much from them — including the fact that spiders aren’t insects! (I know, I know. Several of my science teachers would be disappointed in me.) Here’s to another five hundred, and more — and even more enjoyment for you, as well as us!

I can’t add anything which none of your other comments haven’t already said. Your photos and knowledge have long since given me inspiration to try and photograph insects. I will forever be grateful.
