A Photographic Journey Through South Staffordshire
Look Up At The Oaks
Silk Button Gall Wasp (Neuroterus numismalis) – On your travels have a look out for these clustered on the underside of oak leaves. Each gall contains the larva of the wasp. The last image shows what the top of the leaf looks like.
They can cover the whole oak leaf, Alison, so should be fairly easy to spot. We don’t always generally look up. I just stopped by this oak and let my eyes roam until I spotted these, and other species of gall. They kinda remind me of Cheerios 🙂
These are pretty cool, Pete. It never would have occurred to me to look under one of those leaves. Of course, the last time I saw something like these it was Poison Ivy Gall and I wouldn’t think of turning those leaves over. 🙂
That is so interesting Pete, I would never have known that. I will be on the look out.

Ah, I noticed the speckling on the tops of leaves but never the cheerios on the underside.

Cheerios came into my mind too. The bundles all look very neat.

They remind me much more of red blood cells than Cheerios, but that’s what I get for many years of looking through a microscope.

That is one thing I am contemplating on getting, is a microscope. They do look like blood cells, though.

These galls look fascinating, like little pills. Astonishing what kind of “houses” they build for nesting.

I always find plant galls fascinating. There are more out there than we realise, and many with complicated reproductive cycles.

They are! You remembered me of one I saw on beech leaves with a funny form. I think this topic can fill books 😉
