Sun Fly

Helophilus pendulus – I have seen a couple of these hoverflies around the garden pond today, buzzing around, and almost like they are chasing one another before settling down on the plants, and then off they would go again, then settling on a rock this time … and off again with boundless energy. This is a male of the species, and the only shot I got before it was off again!

  1. You and Mike think alike! Similar thoughts must be hovering in the air, and I feel inspired to add one to this admixture. I wasn’t going to do another post today but now, somehow, I can’t help myself . . .

  2. You may have gotten only a single shot of this handsome hoverfly, but it is certainly a good one. I guess I need to pay more attention to the colors and patterns of the ones that I see–I tend to categorize them all mentally into a single group.

    • Thank you, Mike. I have managed to photo 23 different species of hoverfly here, yet there are around 281 species in Great Britain. Even some that look the same can be a different species once you look more closely at it.
