Yes, the large eye spots do help deter predators. When threatened the butterfly will flash them.

Thank you, Sandra 🙂 Sometimes its the position you are stuck in and there is nowhere else for you to go, and the limited time you have of getting the shot in. Just seconds after this a dog walked by and scared the butterfly off! So, with ths shot a lot was down to luck. 🙂
