Aglais urticae – There are a few of these butterflies around at the moment but they are always on the move. I got lucky with this one. One of my favourite butterflies. Double-click on image to enlarge.

Beautiful shot, Pete. I have a similar problem trying to chase down the butterflies that I see at this time of the year.

Thank you, Mike 🙂 Sometimes you get lucky. Yesterday I though I got it down to a ‘T’ with photographing, hunkering down low, almost to their level. Now today that didn’t work at all, lol! 🙂

This is one I’d never heard of. To my mind, ‘tortoise-shell’ always has referred to a kind of cat. This one’s lovely!

These remind me of my childhood, as they were very common back then throughout spring and summer. Thank you 🙂

Thank you very much, Steve 🙂 I was lucky with this one! Had to follow it a little before it settled again.

Beautiful picture! I like them too. I often saw them in my childhood, but unfortunately I don’t see them anymore or very seldom. Nice to see it here!

Yes, I saw them more often in my childhood, too. But so far the warm spring has been good for them. Thank you 🙂

It is a beautiful orange – a ‘warm’ butterfly.

This one is new to me too, though there are several in northern Minnesota in the summer and fall with very similar colors, though the markings are, of course, quite different and distinct. This is certainly a pretty one!

I have seen quite a number of these lately in the garden and in the fields, so that is hopefully a good sign that there numbers will increase.
