It’s an odd thing to say, perhaps, but I feel a stillness and a calm with this simple image of a snail nestled in the fold of a nettle leaf. Maybe it is because there is so much going on in the world right now, so much has happened and is still happening, peoples minds are unsettled and unsure of the future, as a harsh wind of change has circled the globe. The snail appears rested, calm, nestled in the fold of a nettle leaf. Double-click image to enlarge if you wish.

Maybe it was building up courage before venturing far enough out of its safe bubble to find out just how prickly the world outside its borders could be. But then again, it made its way there–unless it was dropped there by a careless bird?

It is probably unaffected to the stings that mammals and birds may suffer. They are so well adapted to their microcosmic world.

It is soothing– nice shot, Pete. I wonder if it is the Fibonacci spiral (sacred geometry) that makes it so calming? Order in chaos!

You could very well be right there about the scared geometry, Eliza! Thank you 🙂

Blissfully unaware of the problems humans contemplate, nature does what it’s always done.

It IS a very calming image. Makes me feel as small as an insect and worlds away from the current ‘climate’.

Glad you feel the ‘calm’ too, Vicky 🙂

Very nice and great framing with the leaves behind and on the side. The latter seeming to roll down and around with the snail’s shell.

Thank you very much, Ted 🙂 It was out of direct sunlight and I think this has helped with the mood, also.

Yes, nature is unaware of all the turmoil….and many species are enjoying less polluted air, worldwide.

That less polluted air is certainly a real bonus, Sandy 🙂

I agree with Liz’s metaphorical view. Your introduction is well expressed too with reference to the maelstrom of thoughts and feelings and fears swirling about now – your snail certainly represents a calmness, serenity and a certainty that we could consider drawing from.

Thank you very much, Anne 🙂 Nature has a good way of filtering out things and dealing with what is more immediate without apparent distraction.

Have you ever come across Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s book Gift From the Sea? It’s a marvelous book, and one I re-read often, either in part or in whole. She focuses each chapter on a particular ‘gift’ from the sea, and her chapter on the moon shell picks up on the same dynamic the snail shell represents: calm, and focus. I think you’d like it.

I haven’t, but I will look into it, as you suggest, thank you 🙂

The state of the world lately makes me wish I could pull myself into this shell for a while and escape. It’s comforting to know that there are other creatures in this world who can live their existence without the stress we humans experience. OTOH, we don’t have to worry about some gull prying us out of our shell for a tasty snack. 🙂

I think doing we are are doing photographing when we can and sharing our images and experiences from around the world through our blogs is comforting, and kind of like an extended shell fromw where you can leave everything thing else behind, but for a short while.

Hopefully the snail will enjoy his peace while he can and won’t suffer too much later from a world of stings and pecks. Great image. It’s a metaphor for all of us who are curling up into nature for protection right now.
