Pararge aegeria – A few of these around at the moment in the woods. Always a joy to see. The delightfully named Speckled Wood is a butterfly very well adapted to dappled woodland glades, and it can tolerate shade better than most other butterflies.

I always find it fascinating how so many creatures seem to be drawn to perches and other resting places where they blend in perfectly with their surroundings. Do they look at their own wings (or other parts) and compare them to what’s around them? This one surely blends in beautifully!

When I read the name, I thouhgt of a piece of deadwood. The name is perfect as the butterfly is in his camouflage.
