A Photographic Journey Through South Staffordshire
Nature Sometimes Comes To You
Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci) – I found this little beetle on my bedroom windowsill. They are around 2-3mm (1/8in) long. Double-click image for a closer look.
I really like the antennae on these critters. At first I thought this one just lived around carpet, but then I took another look and realized its patterning resembles carpet, too.
You wasn’t far off the mark there, Linda. The larvae of this beetle will eat the fibres of your carpet if you have them resident in your house. I think this one flew in the window … well I hope it did!
Whoa, what the…? I thought this was a weird type of ladybird, but the
Carpety scales are a bit far out. How common is this as I’ve never seen a beetle like this?
They are fairly common. I found another today on my bathroom floor. I am glad it is tiled, for they do like to eat your carpets, well the larvae, does. I think (I hope!) they are flying in through the windows.
great shot 🙂

Aptly named given it’s woven appearance and diet. Super cool picture Pete!

Thank you, Sandra 🙂 You don’t really want them in your house.

The tiny scales (?) on its head, thorax, and wing covers are so reminiscent of those on a butterfly’s wing–quite unexpected!

It is unusual for a beetle to have scales like that, I guess. But that’s what they look like.

Awesome macro once again! No wonder it is called a carpet beetle… look at that design on it 😀

Thank you very much, Indira! 🙂 They not only look like a carpet, but they will also ‘eat’ your carpet. Be well there, and stay safe.

I will keep my eyes open in case these distinctive critters turn up here.
