A Photographic Journey Through South Staffordshire
Common Yellow Dung Fly
Scathophaga stercoraria – flies, like spiders, are not everyones cup tea, I know … but here is another fly, this one I discovered resting on fern. Double-click image to enlarge.
Exactly right. Each fly foot has two fat footpads that give the insect plenty of surface area with which to cling. The adhesive pads on the feet, called pulvilli, come equipped with tiny hairs that have spatula-like tips. These hairs are called setae. (From a quick Google search of “the feet of flies; there’s lots more info there.)
I like his red eyes, but wouldn’t want his mucky little feet trampling on my dinner. Flies are very interesting looking up close though and this one is an unusual colour, at least I’ve never seen a yellow one.
Amazing detail and it looks like it has little suckers on its feet – would that be right? We really like your photo!

Thank you, Liz. I am really please you both like the photo 🙂 I don’t think they are suckers as such, but they help the fly to cling to many surfaces.

Thank you, Anki 🙂 I see these occasionally out on my walks, but they usually fly off when I get near. This one didn’t 🙂

Nice look at this little one and how nice that you were able to capture it on a fern instead of its namesake. 😀

Yes the name conjures all kinds of disgusting things compared to the golden coloured fly itself.

Unfortunate name. Nice photo though. 😊
