A Photographic Journey Through South Staffordshire
Ornate-tailed Digger Wasp
Cerceris rybyensis – That is a bit of a mouthful, I know. I spotted this feeding off the rich nectar of spindle flowers growing in my back garden. Double-click for a closer peek.

I have been stung a couple of times by the black and yellow wasps here, the last time being my own fault for my natural nosiness towards all things nature led me to the opening of a ground nest, and then sharp pain in the right ear lobe. Taught me š
Well, er, uh…I’ve had my own wasp sting experience. I don’t know whether your yellow and black is the same as ours, aka yellowjacket, but I have short painful story to tell. It involves mowing the lawn while wearing shorts and passing over one of the aforementioned yellow jacket nests in the ground. I won’t go into details since I am sure this is a family friendly blog, but suffice it to say I will never mow the lawn in shorts again. šÆ
Interesting species, looks sympathetic. I don’t know if I ever met one, rather outside, than on my balcony. She reminds me of Ectemnius, which grab a lot in my pots in summer time š
Thatās a little beauty and fits the description of its tail and a ādiggerā to boot. Love the way itās so immersed in the blossom intent on feeding.
The blossoms were thriving with insect life, but this little critter was a new one for me and the garden, so quite exciting. Thank your for your, comment š
Wasps are so interesting and the majority of no threat although they all get lumped into bad press. Many are gorgeous as well. We get thisGreat Golden Digger Wasp-Sphex ichneumoneuson several of our flowering plants, including goldenrod and milkweed. It’s real looker. š
