Callimorpha dominula – This is a wonderfully bright coloured day-flying moth.
I found the larva to the adult above feeding on Common Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) on a walk along a local woodland margin back in the spring of 2012.

It’s one you can’t miss during the day. I sometimes see them down by the canal.

That’s quite a spiffy caterpillar, and what wonderful detail you captured of the proboscis!

What a beautiful distinctive moth, especially love that last close up with eyes and is the yellow loop it’s tongue? I have spotted the caterpillars before, there are nettles, brambles and comfrey aplenty near me.

It’s the proboscis, so yes it’s tongue.

That’s it, didn’t want to get the spelling wrong. I knew what I meant in my head.

That moth is quite lovely … and the caterpillar would no doubt be loving that comfrey leaf
