Mimas tiliae – This is a large and impressive hawk-moth with scalloped-edged forewings and olive-green and pinkish markings. The central dark forewing markings may be variable, and in some individuals may be joined to form a cross-band.

What a beauty. I like green and pink in almost every combination, but I never expected to see this. The pattern looks remarkably like hunter’s camouflage.

Wow! Did the army design their camo on this moth do you think?

Hawk-moths are so impressive, probably due to their size. Nice capture Pete.

Thank you Brian. They are one of my favourite of the moths and would be nice to see them more often.

What a beauty, Pete.
I’m so glad to see you posting again (even if you can’t get outdoors much). I hope your health is improving as the days go by.

Interesting camo! I’m curious about the moth trap you mention. What does it consist of?

Beautiful shots of a beautiful hawk-moth! Often overlooked which is a pity. There are such great examples, but I hardly see them. You were really lucky with this one π Do you find many moths in your garden?

Thank you very much π I am lucky I do have many moth visitors, and I also attract them with light into a moth trap I made, then let them go once I have photographed them. I hope to do a post on moth trapping soon as most moths only can be seen at night, and some are as beautiful as butterflies, but rarely seen.

The trap is a good idea. Maybe I should go out to a meadow in summertime (a pity I don’t get up so early ;-). I have a few up here from time to time, especially the caterpillars, but I rarely see these moths. Really wonderful this variety and these fantastic patterns! I am looking forward to your post π
