So funny to see ‘artichoke’ and helianthus joined. I did some exploring, and found out why I haven’t seen it. The USDA map shows it native in exactly two counties in Texas. I’m sure people include it in their gardens, and I just haven’t come across it. It’s interesting that it was a common food source for Native Americans.

This plant was growing in my back garden when I moved in some 26 years ago, and I always thought it was some kind of sunflower but didn’t realise exactly what until recent years. I don’t fancy eating it though. although it might be really nice 🙂
