Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight is quite famous for its different coloured sands, and a craft tourist industry has grown up around it since early Victorian times.
Here are cliffs of sand of varying hues. The sands are coloured due to oxidised iron compounds formed under different conditions, and look great layered in shaped glass ornaments. There are usually 21 shades of sand available.
Turning your head away from these magnificent cliffs towards the sea and you will see the Needles as featured in the previous post.

There used to be lots of colour-layered sand ornaments for sale when I was a kid, I seem to remember them being in homeware shops, sold to adults to buy for a display ornament to take home. I was fascinated with them but never had one of my own.

21 shades… that’s a lot! I visited a place on Mauritius with “only” seven colours and in the sun it was a fantastic natural Spectacle. I think the Isle of Wight is a amazing place to visit…

I’ve seen colored sands, but to have so many in one spot must have been delightful and amazing. It must have been quite fun to fill your own container, too. That sort of souvenir is ever so much better than a postcard or mug embossed with a place name!
