Also called the Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), this was another first for me. There were many of these little birds on the seashore bulldozing the seaweed out of their way with their heads in search of invertebrates hiding underneath it.

I’ve seen this bird (actually, a male, female and a juvenile) just once. They’re so pretty, and they certainly do “turn” a lot in search of food!

Loved these Pete! We have a street on Kiawah named Ruddy Turnstone and I’d never realized these were the birds it was named for. Have seen them on our beach many times. Thanks for the connection!!

What a pretty pattern in the feathers of this bird. Do you know which one is female? Probably the less colorful one? 😊

I think the colours of the sexes are the same Jill. The brighter one appears t be the summer colour, and the duller one coming into winter plumage.

Interesting feather colour and pattern. I haven’t seen any of these birds species on the nature or bird blogs I follow.
The size? of the bird and shape remind me of our Buff-Banded Rail (obviously not the colour) https://vickialfordnatureblog.wordpress.com/category/birds/buff-banded-rail-gallirallus-philippensis/
