A Drenched Beauty

This is one of the best years for peonies I have known here. I do love the rain so long it doesn’t pour endlessly, and this morning it was but a brief spell. I love the freshness and invigoration it brings to the garden, so I couldn’t resist popping out with my camera when the rain had stopped.

The flowers were heavy with the raindrops, looking almost as if they were bowing. I have a special place for Peonies. My parents grew them back home, and they remind me of my younger years growing up, and so enjoying those warm sunny spring days.

Beautiful, especially with the raindrops! Peonies are just beginning to grow here in Alaska – there are two peony farms on our road, and the plants are about 5 or 6 inches tall.

It’s appropriate that you posted these flowers this weekend. When I was growing up, peonies were traditional graveyard flowers, and Memorial Day was the time that we’d go to tend to them. Beyond that, both my mother and grandmother grew them, beautifully. I miss them. They can be grown in Texas, but in my area it’s really an iffy proposition because of the heat, the nature of the soil, and so on. Like lilac and forsythia, they’re just happier a bit more north.

That is very interesting what you say about the peonies there. They always appear to come and go very quickly here. Already the petals are falling from those I shot today.

I love peonies but have only seen them in florist shops here. This one you have shared is a particularly stunning colour which I haven’t seen before.

Raindrops on petals make for wonderful images.

    Beautiful.
Peonies are my favourite flower. I’m so happy I found your website. Me and my 8 year old daughter are sitting here enjoying your amazing photos.
