I believe these are Shanny (Lipophrys pholis), also called Blenny. As the tide pulled out it left these crystal clear pools of water and in them they teemed with these young fish which moved nimbly through the shallow water. They are so well adapted to their environment you would hardly notice them until they moved.

They were, especially as the darn things kept moving. Had to get down in the water to try and get close enough.

They certainly are well camouflaged — and cute. I didn’t have any trouble picking them out, but of course I knew I was looking for a fish. A predator might have more problems.

I think the gulls around there have got used to finding them as the tide goes out and leaves behind some of them trapped in the pools. But there were many of them there.

Looks like they camouflage themselves with tiny grains of sand

They are amazing masters of disguise, and they will change the colour and pattern of their bodies to match their surroundings.

Thank you, Tish ๐ The water was alive with them, but they are so small and fast moving.

Have memories of paddling with the little critters so I know they move like lightning.

It seems that it didnโt want to be spotted. ๐

๐ Ah, but as the tide receded the gulls knew where they were.

I did spot the little fishy, but only because I looked for a little fishy, and had to zoom in. How on earth did you spot them to get your photos? They look just like sand, incredible.

I always get restless on a beach and cannot sit for long unless I am reading or listening to music, so I always wander off with my camera in hand. When I walked through these clear and shallow pools I saw tiny flickers of movement in the water and that was the only way I would have seen them. Once my eye was drawn to them so was my camera ๐ Thank you, Jill ๐
