Quite A Spectacle

Dark Spectacle Abrostola triplasia

This extraordinary moth is aptly named. The form of the scale tufts on its head looks like it is wearing a pair of goggles or ‘spectacles’, and hence its name Dark Spectacle (Abrostola triplasia).

  1. When I saw this in your other post, and read your description of it as wearing glasses or spectacles, I thought: or goggles! It looked to me like an early aviator, which makes some sense, since it flies, too. It’s really a delightful creature, that brings a smile every time I look at it.
