Rose

Today I had my late birthday present come. My first speedligh flash unit, the Nikon SB-700. The weather has been rather dismal, and I thought I had been transported to autumn it has been so damp and cold here. However, between showers I manged to get a few shots in to play with my new toy. I guess I have some learning to do to get the best out of it. But it come with a nice case, some filters, a diffuser and a bounce card. I just need to get the experience to go with it.

Best late birthday gift imaginable for macro enthusiast! Belated wishes and how lovely; the second rose is my personal favourite.

Thank you πŸ™‚ It has been raining here almost constantly for the past couple of days, so with a short window of opportunity I went out between showers.

The rain must have been refreshing. Wish it were raining here. I has been in the 90s (fahrenheit) so rain would cool everything down for the most part. Is it cool where you are? I always find that rain makes the best of photos – especially when it is on a leaf or a petal of a flower πŸ™‚

The rain was refreshing. It had been very hot, but being in a temperate zone the temperatures can fluctuate from one day to the next, with mixed wet and dry spells.

That has got to be confusing, but then, it probably allows for different types of photos every day. The weather over here changes really quickly too. One day it can be in the 100s or 90s and the next be in the 60s. It is really hard to know what weather to expect every day.

You seem to be doing pretty good with your new birthday present Pete. Now, that is what I call double raindrops on that rose.

Thank you, Marilyn πŸ™‚ I was a bit rushed because it began raining again within minutes, but I was so eager to give it a go, lol πŸ™‚

Beautifully done. I’d say you have the knack already. Now, it’s just a matter of perfecting your technique. Happy birthday, and happy photographing!

Thank you Linda πŸ™‚ Yes, I only had a short window to play with my new toy because of the weather, so just tried the standard modes. I am hoping today will be better and I can get out and do some experimentation with it. I much prefer natural, ambient light, but sometimes you need just that little bit extra, especially when the light is not always that good.

I am a bit late . but I also wish you many happy returns of the day, dear Pete πŸ™‚
And have my thankfulness for all your interesting nature (plants and insects) pictures, which I like very much.

    All the best, dear Pete

When I was researching on flash I found such an array of options like flash rings, dual flash on brackets and the like, and quite expensive, too. This unit seemed to get a lot of praise from the photographic community so I thought I would give it a go. I found my pop up was okay, once I tinkered with the settings, but I wanted something extra. I will see how it goes πŸ™‚

Looks like you’ve made good use of it already Pete. I had to laugh because I read the first few words in the post and assumed someone had given you a rose for your birthday. That’s romantic, I thought, and then read on! Beautiful droplets on those roses – wet weather is sometimes useful for photography! πŸ™‚
