Stag’s Horn Fungus

Xylaria hypoxylon

Also called ‘Candlesnuff Fungus’, this antler-shaped fungus branches out with a pale- greyish colour. The stem is black at the base. Size 3 to 5cm tall, 3 to 5mm diameter.

Seen almost throughout the year, but especially during autumn and winter. Found on the dead wood of deciduous trees, mainly on the stumps of cut beech. Common and widespread.
